Most patients come into Magruder Laser Vision hoping they’re a candidate for LASIK surgery, they may be surprised when they learn that PRK (Photorefractive Keratectomy) eye surgery would be a better option for their eyes and/or lifestyle. LASIK surgery creates a corneal flap, about the thickness of a piece of scotch tape. In PRK there is no flap, the epithelium, the outmost layer of corneal cells are removed and then the laser treatment is performed.

Photorefractive Keratectomy was first performed in the mid 1980’s. The PRK technique continues to be refined and improved and gives you the same results as LASIK: great vision!

Why PRK May Be Your Best Surgical Option

There are several reasons why PRK may be your best option in vision correction. Some of the common reasons are the cornea is too thin to create a flap, an irregularly shaped cornea or for some patients, their cornea may be scarred from a previous accident.

If PRK is the recommended procedure for you, don’t be alarmed. It is a great procedure. Your healing time will be a little longer than LASIK, and initially there may be more discomfort but you’re going to have a great outcome!!

At Magruder Laser Vision, we use the most advanced eye surgery technology for PRK surgery and help our patients prepare for eye surgery. If PRK is recommended, follow these simple rules:

  • Begin using Fish Oil supplements. Studies have shown that Omega 3’s reduce inflammation and dryness, and help you heal faster during your PRK eye surgery recovery.

  • PLAN AHEAD. Tell your friends and employer that you are having PRK eye surgery and will need a few extra days to heal and recover.

  • Purchase your favorite OTC pain medication (Tylenol, Aleve, Ibuprofen, etc.) and place a few cool packs in your freezer.

Tips for PRK Eye Surgery Recovery

The day after your PRK procedure may be uncomfortable but can be managed with over the counter medications. The best way to manage pain from PRK is to stay one step ahead of it. During your PRK eye surgery recovery, try to spend the day sleeping. Our patients have mentioned that they passed the time by keeping their eyes closed and listening to an audio book or music.

Over the years, we have found that PRK surgery patients who are prepared are those who have the easiest time with PRK eye surgery recovery. Don’t be afraid to ask questions! The first step is to schedule your complimentary consultation online to find out if you’re a vision correction candidate, and which solution is right for you.
