It’s not unusual for patients considering a vision correction procedure to ask family members, friends, and co-workers for input. Unfortunately, this is where many well-meaning individuals unintentionally continue to spread myths & old wives tales about vision correction. Most of the old wives tales are scary and haunting stories perfect for a Halloween horror movie. Doc Brock Magruder, an Orlando ophthalmologist at Magruder Laser Vision, wants to set the record straight and dispel three of the most often told myths about vision correction procedures.

Myth #1
– There is no cure for astigmatism. Astigmatism is a scary word referring to a refractive error of the eye. The cornea is misshapen, resembling more of a football than a basketball. Patients with astigmatism often have difficulty with wearing toric contact lenses, which are specialty lenses prescribed to correct vision problems resulting from astigmatism. Many patients believe that the shape of their cornea, from astigmatism, prevents them from having vision correction procedures. This is false! Magruder Laser Vision was the first in the area to offer LASIK eye vision correction to patients with astigmatism. Wavelight Refraction is highly effective offering a cure to astigmatism that allows people to pitch their glasses and contacts and enjoy clear vision. Myth busted!

Myth #2
– “Eye floaters” cannot be removed. Eye floaters are a common complaint from patients, especially as they grow older. The vitreous, a jelly-like substance in our eyes, grows thinner as we age. As it thins, it becomes more susceptible to debris being trapped within. This debris is said to be “floating” across the field of vision. Most “floaters” are eventually absorbed and are not noticeable, but some do remain a constant source of annoyance which is correctable through vision correction procedures. Using laser technology, the debris can be targeted and broken up into minuscule pieces that no longer obstruct vision. Myth busted!

Myth #3
– There is no way to see clearly without using reader glasses. One of the most annoying signs of aging is that our dependency on reader glasses increases as presbyopia, loss of near vision, progresses. Many people resign themselves to purchasing numerous pairs of reader glasses, which are conveniently left around the house and workplace for quick use, believing that there is no way to beat the blurry vision. Doc Brock offers the KAMRA procedure which can improve near vision by reshaping the front of the eye. The KAMRA is a small, transparent inlay that are implanted in quick procedures to help patients pitch the readers and regain clear vision. Myth busted!
