I am afraid that there is a high risk that I may completely lose my vision.
As with all surgical procedures, there is a certain amount of risk involved. The reality of losing your vision as a result of having laser eye surgery is very remote. In fact, the risk is less than long term contact lens use. There are safeguards in place during every aspect of the procedure to minimize any variation from the expected process.
I’m a busy person and can’t afford any down time for recuperation.
Most patients may notice immediately that their vision is more clear. In fact, other than being out of commission the day of the procedure, you usually won’t miss a beat of your active life. You may be permitted to drive the next day and will come back for a follow-up visit that takes about 15 minutes. It doesn’t get much easier than that.
I’m really worried about the laser touching my eye.
The truth is that the laser light will come in contact with your eye as the procedure is performed. However, the machine itself does not touch your eye. The laser energy specifically targets your lens and releases in very short, controlled bursts that are customized to the needs of your unique situation.
I’ve heard driving at night is difficult after laser eye surgery.
Advancements in LASIK technology have all but eliminated many cases of this previously experienced side effect. Dr Magruder participated in a recent study showing patients preferred their laser vision to their old vision with glasses and contacts.
I have a low pain tolerance. Can I handle this procedure?
In actuality, laser eye surgery patients may not experience any pain. Some patients do report feeling a slight amount of pressure for a few short moments, but it soon passes. Patients will typically receive a mild sedative and numbing drops are administered to the eyes to further eliminate the possibility of a painful experience. Very rarely the discomfort is worse, but is typically quite brief and over in seconds.
