Dr. Shumski is Orlando’s leader in Modern Cataract Surgery & Refractive Surgery, and one of the premier Cataract & Refractive Surgeons in America. With a background in biomedical engineering from Johns Hopkins University, he is a sought after industry collaborator & consultant on the newest generation of lasers and lens implant technologies. Dr. Shumski is an expert at customizing your cataract and vision correction surgery to your eyes & lifestyle.


Educational Background
Dr. Shumski graduated from Johns Hopkins University where he completed his pre-medical studies majoring in Biomedical Engineering with a concentration in Mechanical Engineering. Dr Shumski graduated from Medical School at the University of Pennsylvania.
He also completed a Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering while at Johns Hopkins. He concentrated in Robotics and worked with Engineers & Hopkins surgeons doing research in Medical Robotics.

Laser Cataract Surgery Expertise

Dr. Shumski worked with engineers from Lensar to develop the ALLY Robotic Laser Cataract Surgery System. He helped design the patient interface and docking system, operated in preclinical animal studies, and performed the first Robotic Laser Cataract Surgery in the United States.

Artificial Intelligence in Eye Care
Dr. Shumski worked with engineers from Google for nearly a decade to bring AI to eyecare. They developed a deep learning model for diagnosing eye conditions using retinal photographs. Their research was published in Ophthalmology, the leading journal in eyecare, published by the American Academy of Ophthalmology.

Fun fact: Did you know that for a short time Orlando had a professional football team, the Orlando Apollo’s, of the Alliance of American Football League. The team was coached by Steve Spurrier, and Dr. Shumski was the Official Team Ophthalmologist!
