Is SMILE Clinically Proven?
Yes, it is! The SMILE laser technology has been through controlled clinical studies since 2007 and has been commercially available since 2011. That’s close to 10 years on the market! Here at Magruder Laser Vision, our vision correct team specializes in the use of laser-assisted procedures, so you are in good hands with us.
How the SMILE Procedure Works
The SMILE treatment at Magruder Laser Vision is a one-step, one-laser procedure. We use a short-pulsed laser to create a micro-precision hole or bubbles within the cornea sublayer. These bubbles form planes, which creates a lenticule (a disc-shaped piece of tissue). Our exceptional surgical team will gently remove the lenticule, and restore your vision. The entire procedure is odorless, noiseless, and takes less than 60-minutes to complete. The steps needed to create the lenticule take 23-seconds on average.
What Makes SMILE Different From LASIK?
While SMILE and LASIK are different, in that variations of the LASIK procedure creates a corneal flap and SMILE does not, they offer the same outcome of visual freedom. The advantage of SMILE is that it uses a small keyhole incision, allowing the majority of patients to resume normal activities the very next day.
Our vision correction team here at Magruder Laser Vision is dedicated to finding the right laser treatment option for you and your vision, so that you can get back to what truly matters with clear sight.
Key Features of SMILE Over LASIK
Unlike LASIK, where a flap is created, the SMILE laser will pass through the upper layers of your cornea into a sublayer, where a lenticule is created a third of the way down. This means that:
Who Is A Candidate For SMILE?
To determine which vision correction procedure would provide you with the most optimal outcome, we look at your corneal thickness, your lifestyle, and your eyeglasses/contact lens prescription. During our complimentary consultation, our experts will take you through advanced diagnostic testing and one of our surgeons will discuss your options with you.
If you have any questions, we will answer them at this time.
What to Expect During Recovery?
Since Magruder Laser Vision’s inception, we’ve been focused on exceptional surgical outcomes and unparalleled patient comfort and care, allowing us to provide relatively quick recovery times.
After your SMILE procedure in our world-class surgical center, you should be able to return to regular activities the following day. This includes participating in sports, wearing make-up, driving, and going to work.
What Does Recovery Look Like?
The visual recovery period for SMILE at Magruder Laser Vision is rapid, with patients reaching 100% within 1-2 weeks.
SMILE® From Zeiss Technology
SMILE® from ZEISS enables the first Small Incision Lenticule Extraction procedure for minimally invasive laser vision correction. It offers a potentially lower incidence of transient dry eye syndrome and wider preservation of biomechanical stability.
