So, what’s up with villains wearing glasses in today’s pop culture? Have you noticed the growth of this recent trend? Not too long ago, it was only the nerdy characters who donned the old horn rimmed frames to lead quiet and unobtrusive lives until they surprised us by transforming into the do-good heroes they were meant to be. Clark Kent (Superman), Dr. Bruce Banner (The Incredible Hulk), and even Horatio Caine (CSI Miami) all wear glasses to hide their identities and try to remain anonymous. Heck, even Peter Parker wore glasses before being bitten by that radioactive spider and morphing into Spiderman. Doc Brock, an eye surgeon in Orlando, believes that your eyes are indeed the windows to your soul and that they should function as they were intended to: providing perfect vision without glasses.

Now, it seems that some of the characters we love to hate, the villains of movies and television, are appearing on the large and small screen wearing glasses for similar purposes.  It seems to be that this is an attempt to keep their true, despicable personas from surfacing. The characters Mr. Ripley (The Talented Mr. Ripley), Warden Norton (Shawshank Redemption), and James Wesley (Daredevil) are just a few examples of those we couldn’t immediately identify as being a good person or a dastardly one. Are they products of great writing? Perhaps they are. Or, was it the addition of the spectacles from the prop department? Finding the right pair of glasses for these particular characters to hide behind afforded each of them the ability to plot and scheme in relative anonymity while the audience went along for the ride, not knowing what to expect from them.

If you’re still wearing glasses, are you doing so because you’re comfortable hiding behind them? Wouldn’t you prefer to see the world clearly, unencumbered by heavy frames and lenses? Maybe you are concerned about the treatment options available to help you get out from behind those frames?
